To be followed by interns and work-study students in the CLC Lab

The CLC is on the web at www.clc.wvu.edu

Questions or problems: contact Sandy at charles.baldwin@mail.wvu.edu.

If Sandy is not around or for facilities/room questions: contact Michele Marshall by going upstairs, or by phone at 293-3107x33407 or at michele.marshall@mail.wvu.edu (Michele is the Senior administrator in the English Department and the Building Coordinator).

  • Security. Never leave the lab unattended, other than a quick run to the rest room etc. If you need to leave and non-CLC personnel are using the lab, politely ask them to finish their work. Once they depart, do not leave without making sure that all the doors are shut.
  • Opening. If you are the first to arrive and you do not have your own CLC lab key, get the master key from the English Department Office and open the CLC main entrance (facing the street). Return the key immediately. Turn on the lights. Throw away any papers, trash, etc., arrange the chairs and tidy up in general.
  • Closing. If you are the last to go, make sure all the doors are secured and locked when you leave. The computers should be logged out but can be left on.
  • Cleaning. In general, work study students should make sure that the lab remains clean and tidy.
  • Lab Hours. Hours are posted here http://clc.as.wvu.edu:8080/clc/about/spring2007schedule. If you can't make your scheduled time, for whatever reason, be sure to contact Sandy via email.
  • Lab Use. We serve drop-in traffic from English Department faculty and students. It's OK to let others use the lab, but people in the English Department or in English Department classes get priority. Don't be afraid to bump people off computers.
  • Front Desk. During our open hours, at least one work study must sit at the front desk and act as receptionist for drop in traffic. If there are two work studies, you can take turns and the second can be in the lab monitoring activities there. Work studies primary job is to direct drop-in traffic to the computers in the lab. They use the guest accounts, password "clcguest," all one word, no quotes.
  • Running the lab. Drop-in traffic can use the internet, print, write essays, and so on. If they want to do other things and you are unsure how to help them, e.g. they want to run a CD-ROM or make a web page, direct them to Sandy in person or via email. Printing is free and additional paper available upstairs, but please be sensible: if people are printing hundreds of pages or ink-intensive graphics, suggest that they limit the printing and bring their own paper. Similarly, while we are not monitoring what content people access on the computers, if the material is offensive or if there is loud audio or in the case of other problems (use your judgment), ask them to either look / listen elsewhere etc. or to finish up. You can direct such issues to Sandy, if necessary.
  • Mailboxes. Mailboxes are on the wall to the right of the CLC entrance. All interns and work studies should have a mailbox. Please check these when you come in. Workstudies should use their mailbox for time sheets.
  • Phones. Our phone number is 293-3107x33490. Answer the phone "Center for Literary Computing, may I help you?" Either take a message or direct the call to someone in the lab. Try not to make personal calls. The phone is by the front desk.
