Essay 2
Five pages / 1250 words minimum + works cited. Proofread and headed by name, date, class and essay title. Due Dec 13 by 6 pm via email to Sandy (either as attachment or in the body of the message)
Write a coherent, thesis-driven essay dealing with one of the following texts: Swoon, After the Quake, Loot, The Toughest Indian in the World, Everything's Eventual, and David Boring. Your essay may develop from your presentation and/or wiki postings.
As "thesis-driven," your goal is to argue your point, to convince the reader of your thesis. Your essay must engage with the text, and make attentive and accurate use of textual evidence. Your essay should use a logical structure to present and demonstrate your thesis. Some starting points:
- a particularly rich or interesting passage in the text (a scene, story, or panel);
- a character or theme or image in the text;
- paratextual or visual information in the text;
- the language of the text, e.g. questions of style, structure, voice, or point of view.
Use these starting points to develop a thesis about the work as a whole. Your exploration should be informed by the class's cultural and historical frameworks, as well as by the class reading, discussions, and responses.
Part of the 11/29 class will be devoted to brainstorming on your essays. On 12/8, be sure to bring 5 copies of your essay draft to class for workshopping.
