From Rhizome: "There is no difference between what a book talks about and how it is made. Therefore a book also has no object. As an assemblage, a book has only itself, in connection with other assemblages and in relation to other bodies without organs. We will never ask what a book means, as signified or signifier: we will not look for anything to understand in it. We will ask what it functions with, in connection with what other things it does or does not transmit intensities, in which other multiplicities its own are inserted and metamorphosed, and with what bodies without organs it makes its own converge. A book exists only through the outside and on the outside. A book itself is a little machine..."

Your task is to make a link or association from the quote to the course. There are four steps: 1) review, 2) re-state the quote, 3) find the critical principle, 4) and invent your theory.

First, read the quote in the context of the essay. Look over the essay and make sure you understand the context for the quote in the overall essay.

Second, write in the comment box below, re-stating what the quote means in your own words. Make sure that the subject of your comment is Re-Statement. When you are done, add the comment.

Third, write in the comment box below, stating the critical principle of the quote. The critical principle is the distinction or difference the quote is emphasizing. One way to approach is to ask what distinction it is making about books and writing. List contrasts you find in the quote (or that you are led to by the quoting), in the form: typical views of books/writing vs. "rhizome" views of books/writing. Make sure that the subject of your comment is Critical Principle. When you are done, add the comment.

Fourth, write the theory of multimedia writing and hypertext supplied by the quote. Make sure that the subject of your comment is Theory. When you are done, add the comment.

A book by itself is not connected to anything else and each book has it's own story. We know how to use a book, but we do not ask or analyze the usage. A book is tangible and can have multiple concepts as well as a functions. A book will always have a concept but different people interept books differently. A book will always be a form of expression for different people and different purposes.

"A book exists only through the outside and on the outside." This means that we can see the book, we can read it, and touch it. A Rhizome exists only on the inside. One cannot see a Rhizome nor touch it. Also, you do not choose to make a Rhizome because your body makes them without consciously thinking about it. When writing or reading a book you have to take a conscious effort to do so.

Books and the internet are similar because both of them can have different meanings and different purposes. The internet is interconnected because of links and hypertext. Books are not connected because "a book has only itself."
